Crush Groove
(Dead Guy Records)

It's refreshing to hear a white rapper not doing the Eminem thing, though it's curious to find one in 2004 doing the House of Pain thing. Crush Groove looks like it will be a savvy old-school throwback to the later Sugar Hill era (I'm talkin' the tasty uncoolness of "At the Ice Arcade," "Beat Street," and "Vice"), but the music is pure 1991 college-dorm hip-hop.

Surprisingly, that's not such a bad thing. I like 1991 college-dorm hip-hop. I just wonder whether these guys are aiming for that style in a retro kinda way, or whether they just never got over it. Eh, doesn't matter. Some of it made me bob my head; some of it made me laugh.
