Cocteau Twins
The Spangle Maker
(4AD/Capitol 15773)

The first fruits of the Cocteau Twins lineup that would produce Treasure later the same year, this EP is a nice foreshadowing of something brilliant about to happen. By far the high point is "The Pearly Dewdrops' Drops," one of the band's best singles and finest moments overall (included here in 7" and 12" versions), but the other tracks are fine early Cocteau artifacts ("The Spangle Maker," "Pepper-Tree").

In the grand scheme of things, there's not much here that the layperson can't live without, but anyone with an affinity for the Cocteaus, especially Treasure-era, will love it. Incidentally, I just read that the Cocteau Twins themselves consider Treasure to be their worst album, so I hope I never find myself in a pub with any of them arguing this point. I'd hate to have to break a bottle over Liz Fraser's beautiful head.
