Marc Anthony
You Sang to Me
(Columbia 76428)

I must say, although I'm well past the age where I should be heavily into Top 40 music, I have been really enjoying the magnificent streak of excellent songs that has been ruling the airwaves since Britney & Co. began to dominate the scene a few years back. It's bound to crumble at some point, as it always does, but so far the glorious reign of ear-candy pop has been pretty resilient. It probably peaked in summer '99 with "Livin' La Vida Loca," but it's still strong, and nary a day goes by where I don't hear something I like (that more appropriately is aimed at persons 15 years my junior who have at least 15% more "Hello Kitty" apparel). (?)

Case in point: "You Sang to Me," a sublime midtempo love song by hunky Marc Anthony. I have not yet encountered it on the radio and felt compelled to change the station, and so owning the CD single seemed the sensible thing. Of course, it makes much more sense to just hear it when it comes on in the car, but the day will come when it has vanished from the air and then I will be able to rekindle the magic with the single.

The disc has five versions (original album version, remix, radio edit, Spanish, and Spanglish). In order of deliciousness, the versions are as follows: radio edit, Spanglish, album version, Spanish, and remix. They all good, though.

I doubt I'd ever buy the album, so this is likely to be my entire Marc Anthony collection 'til my golden years. But when I'm 70 and music consists simply of electronic pulses transmitted directly to the interneurons, I shall regale the nursing home staff with tales of the days when melody reigned supreme. Incidentally, is there such a thing as interneurons? It sounded good, but I was talking entirely out my ass.
